One question that we’re often asked by customers here at MyMemoryMattress is “will my memory foam mattress smell?”.
If you’re reading this because you’re looking to purchase a memory foam mattress, but have been put off by reports of the smell of new memory foam, then don’t worry – we’ll allay your fears!
Memory foam mattresses are made from a type of visco-elastic polyurethane, a highly resistant body heat-reactive material. When new, sometimes the memory foam has a distinct smell that dissipates quicker the longer it is allowed to air. In some instances, the glue used to bond the high density foam base to the memory foam mattress may also produce a distinct smell that again dissipates upon airing, particularly during hot summer months. These smells are normal and are not considered to be harmful, although on rare occasions may cause short-lived irritation to those with sensitive respiratory conditions.
Our memory foam mattresses are vacuum-packed immediately after manufacture to enable efficient storage and delivery, and to help avoid damage or contamination before they are unpacked by the customer. As such, they don’t have a chance to ventilate at any point after manufacture. This is why we recommend airing our memory foam mattresses once they have been unpacked after delivery.
The longer the mattress can air, the better. We advise our customers to ventilate their mattresses as much as possible for the first two weeks after delivery – after this time, the ‘new memory mattress’ smell has usually disappeared. If the smell persists after two weeks, we simply advise to continue airing and allowing for as much room ventilation as possible until the level of odour has decreased.
